Watch contents censored by GEMA in Germany - howto

Internet in Germany is lame, thanks to GEMA and his Internet censorship system.

On Youtube Videos, Grooveshark and many others you will get somethings like:

"Unfortunately, this video is not available in Germany because it may contain music for which GEMA has not granted the respective music rights."

I don't like surveillance, so let's break the GEMA system :).

ProxTube to Unblock YouTube videos

ProxTube is a small extension for Firefox. This is not a full proxy, it only find the video's ID via a proxy but you download the video directly at full speed. Should be nice and easy but sometimes doesn't work for me, specially because I use https on youtube.

Use TOR Network to Unblock everything

"TOR is a network of virtual tunnels that allows people and groups to improve their privacy and security on the Internet."

This mean it's hard for the server to know where do you come from and for your ISP in Germany to know what do you do. Peoples use Tor in China, Iran, Egypt to access contents censored by their government... and now Germany! Watch this video to know more "how governments have tried to block Tor".

Sadly it's a bit slower than your normal connection.

Use TOR browser only for censored contents

Download The Tor Browser Bundle. It's a all in one configure Firefox browser and proxy and you can run it in parallel of your "normal" Firefox or other browser.

By using tor only for censored contents you can still enjoy full speed when you use your normal browser and other internet applications (Skype, Torrents, ....)

Choose the node exit country

Of course if your exit node is also in Germany... it will not works. But you can filter exit node by countries! https://www.torproject.org/docs/faq.html.en#ChooseEntryExit

I still have to figure witch country block what.. but adding something like that in your torrc should work.

ExitNodes {US}, {UK}, {CH}
ExcludeExitNodes {DE}

Configuring the tor browser to allow script and flash

Installing the browser is easy, you will find a doc on the tor website if needed. But by default the Tor browser doesn't allow Script and Flash. It's great if you live in Iran (flash has tons of security issue), but we just want to watch some YouTube videos right? So we want Flash and Script!

Go in Tools -> Add-ons or write "about:addons" in the url bar.

Disable Block Script

Enable Flash

Block ads to save some bandwidth

Ads are heavy and useless so you should install adblock plus to make surf faster...

After that you have to close the browser and Videalia (the proxy) and restart it...

Enjoy!

Edit: Apparently on windows machine you will have to install Flash. I'm lazy to try it right now but you can check https://botusharov.wordpress.com/2011/01/09/how-to-watch-videos-restrict...
